HEY FRIEND! I'm Kara
I'm so glad you're here on my little corner of the internet where I share all things business & design. Palme Design Co. is a studio focused on website + branding design for photographers and creatives.
But first what is SEO? It stands for Search Engine Optimization, meaning that when someone searches for a keyword in a search engine like Google, your website is likely to show up towards the top as one of the search results. For example, let’s say you are a portrait photographer in Arizona, and someone in your area searches “photographer for family photos” you want to rank pretty dang high in those search results because that means they are more likely to click on your website and hire you assuming your website is compelling, it’s a two part effort to get that lead.
There are things you can do to your site to optimize your site for certain keywords so you can rank higher in these search results such as:
You’re going to want to do keyword research to know what words people who are searching for the services you offer are typing in their search bar, not just words you want to rank for or think you should rank for. Remember, you’re wanting aligned leads, not leads from just anyone and everyone. This is the foundation to everything else going forward.
Some of my favorite tools for keyword research: SEMrush (paid), Moz (free), Ubbersuggest (paid & free).
Now that you have a list of keywords that potential clients of yours are searing for, let’s put them to good use starting with page titles! A page title is just what it sounds like – a titles for pages on your website. Where do these show up? In those search results on Google and this is also what is show in the tab of the page that’s open in the browser! This helps Google and the people searching get an initial feel for what the page is. You’ll want to use keywords naturally in your page titles and avoid keyword stuffing.
Meta descriptions sound more intimidating than they actually are. They go hand in hand with page titles because right under the page title is the meta description in Google. The description is basically a short overview of what the page is about and ultimately enticing readers to click and visit that page.
Another great way to boost your SEO is to make sure all of your text boxes are assigned a text tag. This helps Google understand the hierarchy of information on your page when it crawls your site for information to determine if your site is a good match for a search. In Showit, these text tags are H1, H2, H3, P, Div, and Nav. Assigning each text box correctly is key! Grab my free SEO Guide for more on how to do this.
Your images should ideally be less than 400kb to help your page load speed be fast (the faster the better in Google’s eyes). You should also be naming your images so that when you upload them to your website platform, they are already optimized for SEO. Again, make sure you are using keywords in the titles of your images.
There’s so much more that I could elaborate on when it comes to SEO. Oh, wait, I did! Grab my free SEO guide to get more details on how to implement these tips and more step-by-step within Showit.
Of course these are just ways to lay a solid foundation. There is much more in-depth SEO work that you can do to increase your rankings. Working with an SEO expert may even be in order if it feels too big of task to tackle yourself or you want help from someone who knows the ins and outs of SEO.
Now, get out there and start laying these important foundational tips to start seeing increased traffic to your site from Google. Happy SEO-ing!
